Dia&Co: A Full Review

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to try out Dia&Co (a plus size personal shopping/styling subscription service) and I thought I would review my first box. [For more information on Dia&Co, please check out my previous blog post–Dia&Co: A Plus Size Solution for Stitch Fix???]

My first box was shipped via USPS 2-day Priority Mail on December 23rd and I received it on Monday, December 28, 2015. I had no problem with the condition of my package since it was carefully packed and all the clothing and accessories were nicely and neatly wrapped in tissue paper inside.

Tucked in the box was a personalized note from my stylist with some fashion tips and an explanation of why certain items were chosen for me. However, none of my clothing pieces had Dia&Co tags with styling tips like they do in the YouTube videos I saw.
INFO CARD 004

Here are pictures of the (5) items I received from Dia&Co.

My Thoughts:

  1. Modamix – Chiffon Pleated front and Sleeved Shirt – $79.00
Lime Green, 20W: I loved the color, quality of fabric, and the pleats on the arms, but the cut of the blouse was boxy and unflattering. It made me look older than I am and the blouse made my bust look even bigger than it is in actuality. It just wasn’t my style (I lookedold and pregnant and I’m not LOL). My shoulders are not nearly as broad as the shirt is designed for and unfortunately, this piece was rather overpriced as well.
  2. Brave Soul – Patterned Top with Zipper – $35.00
Black/Multi, 2x: This blouse fit ok, but was also too boxy for my shape. I thought about keeping it, but it just didn’t seem worth the money. It appeared very cheaply made and I wasn’t sure if it would survive a washing. Had the fabric been a little better, this is one that I would have kept although I didn’t overly love the orange hem on the sleeves.
  3. Fashion to Figure – Peplum Top – $36.90
Black, 2X: This was the piece I was most excited about, but the torso was too boxy and the sleeves a bit snug on my arms. I wanted to keep this piece the most, but it wasn’t practical. The fabric was too heavy for the climate I live in and I couldn’t justify buying something that I would wear only once. Hands down I loved the peplum style the most out of everything. A softer and lighter fabric in this style would definitely be a win in the future.
  4. Junarose – Slouchy Oversized Sweater – $48.99
Dark Blue, 2X: This sweater is simply too boxy. The end of the shoulder seams went halfway down my arm. I know it was supposed to be oversized, but the shoulder and torso are too wide. The fabric was comfy, but seemed cheaply made and there was nothing special about the color. (It actually photographs better than it looked in person. My camera made the dark blue more vibrant than it actually was in person.) Had this piece been priced a little lower, I would have considered exchanging for a smaller size. (Please forgive the flash in the photo I took that makes this look light blue.)
  5. Two Tone Infinity Scarf – $30.00
Lime green: It’s over priced, but was the most wearable item out of the entire box. The fabric was really nice and the colors complement my style and skin tone, so I kept this item.

Overall Impression: ☆☆☆ 3 stars [based on a 5 star scale]

  • Customer Service = ☆☆☆☆☆ 5 stars
  • Delivery/Arrival Time = ☆☆☆☆☆ 5 stars
  • Variety of Brands = ☆☆☆☆☆ 5 stars
  • Quality of Clothing = ☆☆☆ 3 stars
  • Age Appropriateness of Clothing = ☆☆☆☆ 4 stars
  • Fit of Clothing = ☆☆ 2 stars
  • Cost of Clothing = ☆☆ 2 stars

Unfortunately, my first box was pretty much a bust. Although I am genuinely a 2X, my sizing from store to store is fairly consistent. However, the clothing I received from Dia&Co was pretty far out of proportion compared to the norm of what I’m used to and not as age appropriate as I would like. Also, the clothing quality is not the same grade either. (In all fairness, however, I typically bargain shop and I rarely pay retail for any of my plus size apparel.) Additionally, my budget was set lower than the Dia&Co average per item. According to a statement on Dia&Co’s Facebook page, the average of each garment is usually $50.00 (not sure if this includes  the discount or not) and the average garment in my box was about $33.00 with the 20% discount and application of the $20.00 styling fee towards the box.

DIA & CO Invoice 005
I contacted customer service and they were nice enough to offer me credit to try another box. Here’s a snippet from their email response.

Thanks for reaching out – I am sorry that this first box was a miss! The first box is always the trickiest as our styling team is still learning your unique fit and style preferences. The feedback you can provide on your first box will really help us hone in one what works best for you so that we can make smarter selections for your next box, so I would encourage you to leave as much detailed feedback as possible. I’ve also credited your account $20, so if you’d be willing to give us another shot, we will cover the styling fee for you on a future box.

Since customer service was so nice, I’ve decided to give Dia&Co another chance. I plan to raise my budget and share my Pinterest board for my next try. I’ll let you know how it goes. Hopefully, I’ll have better luck. If you are interested in Dia&Co please feel free to use my referral link at https://www.dia.co/r/12y2 or you can go directly to https://www.dia.co/.

Tips:

  1. Do not expect your first box to be amazing; it may take time for your stylist to get a feel for what you like.
  2. Don’t expect Ross and Marshalls pricing–things are going to be a lot more expensive that what you can find at a typical discount clothing store.
  3. Share your Pinterest board with your stylist;  I didn’t and I think that would have been very helpful.

Dia&Co: A Plus Size Solution for Stitch Fix???

As a plus size woman, finding stylish clothes in El Paso is very difficult and I usually don’t have many options beyond Lane Bryant, Catherine’s, and Ross. Since I’m very busy and my options are so limited, I hate shopping and I only go when my best friend threatens my life. However, there may be a solution–Dia&Co.

dia1.png

Although they are not affiliated with one another, Dia&Co (a new plus size fashion subscription service) is essentially the plus size version of Stitch Fix. Since I had been dying to try Stitch Fix, but couldn’t since the company does not cater to plus size women (they carry sizes XS-XL only), I was ecstatic when I discovered a Dia&Co ad while surfing Facebook.

Dia&Co is a personal shopping experience created especially for plus sized women (sizes 14-32) and is not merely a fashion rental site like Gwynnnie Bee. For a $20.00 styling fee, you complete a few surveys and a box of (5) clothing items/accessories is shipped to you according to your specific tastes. If you like an item in the box, your $20.00 styling fee is applied towards your purchase. Additionally, there is a 20% discount for purchasing all the items. Unfortunately, if you return the entire box without making a purchase, your $20.00 styling fee will not be returned or credited.

Since the styling fee is non-refundable, I decided to do a little research on this new service before subscribing and was happy to find that nearly all of the Dia&Co unboxings on YouTube were positive. [Unfortunately, watching reviews on YouTube can sometimes be unreliable because many YouTubers base their perceptions from a free review box, so keep that in mind.] Even still, I was hopeful given the variety of stylish clothes that I saw in several of the videos and I decided to subscribe to find out for myself.

Here are a few Dia&Co unboxings that were helpful to me:

How it Works:

  1. Signup for an account at Dia&Co.
  2. Complete the online surveys. [You can give extra details about your style, body shape, and even share the link to your Pinterest board. You can also establish a price range of what you are willing to pay per garment. In addition, there are several places and opportunities in the surveys to share extra information with your stylist.]
  3. Fill out the payment section to pay your $20.00 Styling Fee.
  4. Wait for your stylist call. [Yes, I received the opportunity to speak to a real person for several minutes about my personal style and what I would like to receive in my box. Just make sure your number is correct in your survey or it can delay your call. Although I don’t know how sustainable it will be, this kind of customer service really brightened my day and made me feel extra special. BTW: Speaking with a stylist is not an option offered by Stitch Fix. ]
  5. Wait for your box. [My box was sent by 2 day USPS priority mail and it arrived quickly despite the Christmas holiday. More details about my first Dia&Co box will be provided in a full review soon.]
  6. Once your box has arrived, immediately open it and try things on. You will only have (5) calendar days before you must return the items you are not purchasing in the free postage paid mailer to avoid being charged for the contents of the entire box .
  7. Complete the “Rate Your Items” survey on Dia&Co and decide if and/or when you would like another box. Unlike many other subscription boxes, you do not need to commit every month to purchasing a Dia&Co box. You have the option of letting the company know when you would like a box at your discretion.

Tips:

  1. Answer the surveys honestly about your body type.
  2. Create a Pinterest board so that you can have a fashion reference to talk with your Dia & Co stylist about. [It wouldn’t hurt to include a full profile picture of yourself so that the stylist is able to see your body type and make choices accordingly.]
  3. Go in with an open mind.
  4. Dia&Co garments may be more expensive than what you are used to at discount retailers like Ross & Marshalls. According to Dia&Co, the average per garment is usually about $50.00, so keep this in mind if you are especially budget conscious.

Does Dia&Co sound like something you are willing to try? If you have already subscribed to Dia&Co, please comment below and let me know what your experience was like. Stay tuned for a full review on my first Dia&Co box.

Book Review: T.M. Frazier’s King

I was at a restaurant hanging out with the bestie when my long awaited advance reader’s copy of King showed up in my phone’s Kindle app. In that moment, I could have died of sheer happiness and I was literally dancing in my seat. Although I completely embarrassed myself in public, I didn’t care because I had a copy of King before its official release. After impatiently waiting for this novel for over a year, I was in bookworm heaven and I wasted no time driving home to dive into what I can honestly say was an adventure of epic proportions.

So before we get started, you need to understand a few things about King. It is not a romance novel for those with delicate sensibilities expecting sweet, but misguided characters finding their way to love and happily ever after. Instead, King is a contemporary (dare I say urban) romance novel where the lines between good and evil, lust and love, savior and sinner are as enigmatic as the novel’s dark, twisty, and seemingly unredeemable characters. Moreover, reading King may make you entirely redefine “happily ever after” because, in this romance novel, love and happiness are far too fragile and fleeting. In King, there are no winners in this game of love–just losers.

If I had to summarize Doe and King’s relationship, I would encapsulate it in the lyrics of Lauryn Hill’s “Ex-factor.”

It could all be so simple
But you’d rather make it hard
Loving you is like a battle
And we both end up with scars

So here’s the skinny!!!

The Good:

  • Despite the year long wait, King didn’t disappoint. I simply couldn’t put it down. This might be the first time in my life where I can’t wait for summer to be over so that I can read the sequel. (Tyrant is due for release August 17, 2015).
  • I’m not sure if it was the visit to Grace’s or the carnival date with Doe, but I absolutely fell head over heels in love with King’s gentler side. A few ounces of light in a heart so dark, made this glimpse of him all the more precious.
  • While it was initially harder to see, Preppy was such a lovable guy. He made me laugh and somehow I always thought he was more dangerous than King. Moreover, it has to be said that the violence between Preppy and his stepfather (especially at the end of the novel) devastated and broke my heart.
  • I loved Doe’s unrelenting honesty; it made me laugh especially how it showed up at Grace’s.
  • The sexual tension between Doe and King was off the charts hot; it was a roller coaster ride I didn’t want to get off. I swear one minute King wants to kill her and the other minute he can’t keep his hands off of her. Doe and King’s chemistry was burning up the pages of my Kindle and I couldn’t get enough.

The Bad: (Yep!!! Blame it on the English Teacher in me!)

  • A few pacing problems. There were times, especially at the very beginning and very end of the novel, where the pace could have used a little adjusting. At the beginning of the novel, I was dying for Doe and King to finally meet and interact and it seemed like it took forever to get there. I think the background on King and Preppy’s friendship could have been moved to a later time. Then at the end of the novel, I felt like the story was flying a little too fast.  I wanted the novel to slow down a tad so I could savor it a bit more.
  • There is a major life altering incident with Doe that is majorly glossed over and it robs the novel of some of its realism. Without spoiling the novel for those of you who haven’t read or finished King, I didn’t believe Doe when she said she was over the incident. There are some things you do not get over so easily and her response (or lack thereof) to the situation does not match how she had been characterized thoughout the novel.
  • Preppy’s friendships with Doe and King, at times, almost eclipses the relationship between Doe and King. Doe and King’s moments, though explosive, left me wanting more. What can I say? I couldn’t get enough of them. Though he was a very like able character, it made me jealous that Preppy took up so much prominent space in the novel.
  • Bear: I really liked him, but he was a very thinly veiled catalyst character. Basically, he shows up to keep the plot moving between Doe and King, but it’s really clear that this is his only purpose in King. I wish Bear had been given a bigger role because his character had the potential to be so much more. Would it be too much to hope that he might get his own story in a later novel (hint, hint)?

The Ugly:

Romance novels rarely surprise me, but the cliffhanger at the end King caught me completely off guard in the best possible way!  Not only was it bittersweet, but I was absolutely astonished by the sudden revelations we learn about Doe and King by the last chapter. All I can say is be prepared for a heart attack when you read the last page. Trust me, Fraizer saved the best for last. Unfortunately, this also my major beef with the novel. Although, I was aware that there would be a sequel with the release of Tyrant, I had no idea how mind-blowing the cliffhanger in King was going to be. Having to wait until August to find out what happens next is absolutely cruel. OMG!!! How am I going to survive the 56 days, 13 hours, 13 minutes, and 4 seconds until Tyrant is released?

Favorite Passage:

I loved sleeping with his big body next to me. I loved the way he made me feel so small. I loved the way his nostrils flared when he was about to kiss me, and then when he did, I loved that he kissed me like he was mad at me. Like it was my fault I was so desirable that he just had to put his lips to mine, his hands on me.

Final Thoughts: (Score: 4.5 of 5)

Although I received King for review, it’s a novel that I would unquestionably spend my money on. Receiving an advance copy, however, made my reading experience all the sweeterI enthusiastically recommend this novel and have already recommended it to anyone who will stand still long enough to listen. So, if you’re tired of sappy, Harlequinesque romance novels, give King a try. You won’t be sorry. It’ll be the best $3.99 you ever spent.

T.M. Frazier’s King Excerpt Reveal

I’m an avid reader and one of my favorite type of books to read are romance novels. However, I became tired of reading the same sappy and predictable Harlequinesque story lines and I began the search for something more. And that something more was T.M. Frazier’s Dark Light of Day. It was addicting, unapologetically raw, and unpredictable. Essentially, Frazier crafts romance novels like no other because her characters are unequivocally broken, but somehow still relatable. Needless to say, when I read teasers for King, I was hooked and I’ve been stalking T.M. Fraizer’s Facebook for over a year waiting for its official release date. And at long last, King will be release on June 15th and I was lucky enough to receive an exclusive except release that I will share with you. [Keep reading for link to excerpt.]

Poisoned Wells

Poisoned Wells

For P.M. (A Teacher of Sorts)

I am not disappointed.

In the beginning…
We only wanted
To borrow
each other
To dance
in stolen hours
And wallow in our lust
Like children playing
in heaps of new fallen snow

I knew,
one day,
I would trade you in
But I let myself
drown anyway
for the temporary
headiness of your mahogany skin,
the molasses of your eyes,
And the almost wisp of your smile.

But no one ever tells you
how hard it will be
To sever your soul in two
How desolate it feels to be
left behind,
not found,
not yours,
not…anything…
Not even myself

Silent riots
Launch like angry missiles
In my mind
And I am left!
Left
in the wake of our illusions
Left
to gather the pieces
of your mistruths
Left
to rediscover
the me I was
before you

And I wonder…
“Is this what it’s like
to die
on the inside;
to be so far from God
And yet no closer to you?”
